Sisterhood is what makes Alpha Chi Omega so special to each of its members. From sisterhood functions to socials to community service events, Alpha Chis always know how to have a good time.

Sisterhood Events
One way Alpha Chis spend time together is through Sisterhood Events. There are many different types of sisterhood events, but the most important part of each one of them is enjoying time with sisters!

Each semester, the chapter sponsors a Sisterhood Retreat. These are often all-day trips that allow sisters to spend time together and bond.  Recently, Alpha Chis have attended Scarowinds, the haunted amusement park, and taken Shagging lessons together.  There have also been recent trips to the lake for a picnic lunch and games, and a big dinner and movie night.  Additionally, the chapter hosts smaller, more frequent Sisterhood Events held at the house periodically throughout each semester that range from ice cream socials to game nights. One of the sisters' favorites is watching Grey's Anatomy, The Hills, or Desperate Housewives in the Red Room at the Alpha Chi house with yummy snacks from our wonderful house mom!

Recruitment & New Member Program

Alpha Chi Omega participates in formal recruitment through USC's Office of Greek Life. All Alpha Chi sisters are very excited about Recruitment 2008. We would like to welcome all of the potential new members to the University of South Carolina and wish each of you the best of luck throughout the Recruitment process as well as your collegiate career as a Gamecock!

Keep in mind that throughout the week, Recruitment days are long and begin early each morning. Remember to drink plenty of water, eat well, and get lots of rest! Recruitment is always an exciting time for our chapter and we, the sisters of Alpha Chi Omega, look forward to meeting you during Recruitment 2008!

Recruitment is held at the beginning of each fall semester in August.

This year's Recruitment is scheduled for August 19-24, 2008.

Alpha Chi is so excited about this year's recruitment and can't wait to welcome its newest members on Bid Day!

The Membership Selection Process...
When a young woman accepts a bid for membership in Alpha Chi Omega, she is welcomed and accepted as she is, and she will never be expected to fit a specific mold. Potential new members are selected for membership in Alpha Chi after meeting our five national standards of membership. The sisters of Alpha Chi, Theta Upsilon Chapter included, all exemplify to the best of our ability the personal qualities of character, leadership, academic interest, personal development and financial responsibility.

After receiving a bid from Alpha Chi, new members participate in an educational program meant to help them make a smooth transition into college life and a lifetime membership in Alpha Chi Omega. This includes education on the history of Alpha Chi Omega nationally and at the University of South Carolina, as well as sisterhood events and socials.

New members receive a buddy on Bid Day who helps welcome them with a brand new Alpha Chi Omega bag and lots of fun goodies! This sister is one of three buddies a new member will receive during her first three weeks as a new member. Bid Day starts the beginning of the Alpha, Chi, and Omega weeks, with buddies for each week. These buddies are typically sophomores who will be taking a new member as their little sister in the chapter. This allows sisters an opportunity to get to know the new members and the new members an opportunity to get to know the sisters!

Several weeks later, new members and chapter members taking a little sister are matched through a mutually selective process. We then have a Big Sis/ Lil Sis Revealing Week, where new members get Alpha Chi gifts and clues about who their new Big Sis may be. After Revealing Night, the new pair make presents for each other that are given out at the Fall Sisterhood Retreat.

New members are also placed in groups of around eight girls and are given a Lyre Leader, an older chapter member who will serve as their mentor and help them with their transition into Greek Life. This leader reminds them of upcoming Alpha Chi events, takes them to dinner and movies and helps them find their own, unique place in Alpha Chi.

The Vice President Education and the Assistant Vice President Education oversee all new member education. These women are dedicated to showing our new members just how much Alpha Chi means to each of its sisters.

Social Functions

Each semester, Alpha Chi Omega sponsors three to five social functions to which chapter members can bring dates.

Fall Grab-A-Date
This event is the first function of the school year, and always a great time. This casual function makes it easy for sisters to help new members find dates! We often use the "Tie-the-Knot" theme, where each girl wears her date's tie.

Fall Band Party
The function's name explains it all! After a theme is chosen, so is a band that matches the time period or genre. Recent themes include "Western Band Party,"  "Through the Decades" and "Rock Star Band Party."

Christmas Semi-Formal
This is usually the last function of the calendar year. Held just before final exams, it gives chapter members a last chance to dress up and have some fun before heading to the library and then leaving Columbia for Christmas break!

Spring Valentine's Grab-A-Date
The Valentine's Grab-A-Date gives chapter members a chance to celebrate the beginning of a new semester. The sisters have recently chosen themes such as "Black and White" and "Tacky Prom."

Senior Band Party
Always a favorite, the senior class decides this function's theme, band, date, and location, which makes it extra special for them! Past themes include "Shag Band Party,"  "Margaritaville," and "Toga Party."

Golden Lyre Ball
Alpha Chi's formal function is usually the last of the spring semester, held just before final exams. One of the most important functions of the year, this formal celebrates the Senior Class and is always one to remember.

Other Functions
Alpha Chi Omega also has socials throughout each semester, where we mix with other fraternities and sororities at USC. Examples include the Halloween social, a St. Patrick's Day party, and a Mardi Gras mixer.

Parents & Alumni Functions

Parents are always very excited to learn about our chapter and their daughters' involvement in Alpha Chi.  In an attempt to encourage that interest, the chapter holds a parents cocktail every fall during Parents' Weekend.

The 2007 Parents' Cocktail!

Our 2007 Parents' Cocktail was held at the beautiful Marriott hotel in the Vista in Columbia. Senior Jess Nocito coordinated a wonderful evening and delicious meal.  Members brought their parents to meet friends, bid at the silent auction, and enjoy cocktails before dinner.  Proceeds from the auction benefit the Theta Upsilon housing fund, which will allow us to make additions and improvements to our house in the near future!

After dinner was served, Vice President of Education Stephanie Wessels began our academic presentation.  While they ate, parents learned of the outstanding academics we promote in Alpha Chi.  Members who received GPAs that were a 3.0 or better received awards, and Stephanie triumphantly announced Alpha Chi's sorority GPA was second best of all sororities, putting the Alpha Chi average well above the all women's and all sorority averages. Awards were also given to the roommates and Big Sis-Little Sis pair with the best combined GPAs.

After dinner, Theta Upsilon parents were able to view the slideshow of sisterhood pictures shown in round two of recruitment, and the members added to the show by singing along and performing a dance.  The night ended with dancing to a live band!
