At the heart of Alpha Chi Omega is a commitment to community involvement that is both extensive and ongoing.
Whether it's a weeklong event dedicated to raising awareness and money to help fight domestic violence, volunteering at a local elderly residence community, supporting the philanthropic efforts of other organizations at USC, or participating in campus events such as Homecoming, Greek Week and Greek Intramurals, Alpha Chis proudly organize and get involved in a variety of community projects.

Alpha Chi Omega's
Volley Against Violence

Each spring, Alpha Chi Omega sponsors Volley Against Violence to raise money for Sistercare and the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation. Sistercare is a non-profit agency that has been providing services to domestic violence victims in the South Carolina Midlands since 1981, and relies on the financial support of individuals, businesses, and civic and faith organizations. (Information courtesy of their website.) The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation works to promote domestic violence awareness and gives to organizations such as Sistercare.
Volley Against Violence is a three-day event dedicated to raising awareness and money to help fight Domestic Violence. All organization entry fees, sponsorships, and donations benefit the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, which in turn gives 95% of the donations to Sistercare of Columbia.
Purple Ribbon Pass
The two days prior to the volley ball tournament are dedicated to raising awareness across campus. The chapter sets up a table in front of the Russell House University Union with information regarding Domestic Violence. As students pass by on their way to class, the sisters ask them to take and wear one of the purple ribbons, which are the national symbol for Domestic Violence Awareness. Small flyers are also distributed to students with statistics on domestic violence in South Carolina, as well as hotline numbers for those students who are victims themselves or know someone who is a victim of domestic violence. During these days, Alpha Chi also hosts a silver sabotage competition where teams compete to get the most pennies but fewest silver coins in their respective jars.

Volleyball Tournament!
Teams of student organizations are divided by gender and put into brackets. The tournament is single elimination with series for the finals and semi-finals, and lasts all afternoon at the Strom Thurmond Wellness & Fitness Center. The last team standing is declared the Tournament Champ! Each team is assigned a coach, a sister of Alpha Chi, who helps to guide them through the tournament, gets them lunch, and makes signs for them. There is also a raffle on the day of the tournament, with awesome prizes donated from local businesses.
Our 2010 Volley Against Violence was a huge success. We raised $1800 for SisterCare through donations and entry fees. All the sisters and tournament participants had a blast!

Thanks to the following organizations and Columbia-area businesses for participating in and supporting our 2008 Volley Against Violence...

Alpha Chi Omega's
Dance Marathon

Every year Alpha Chi Omega participates in the annual Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser, Dance Marathon. The 24 hour event takes place in the Strom Thurmond Fitness and Wellness Center on campus in February. Each sister that participates raises $150.00 in support of Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, helping to support the overall grand total which in 2010 was a record-breaking $147,000!
Throughout the event, a 15 minute line dance is taught to the sisters by morale leaders trained to keep everyone motivated through the 24 hours. This year, we had four sisters serve on the Dance Marathon committee as morale leaders which was a truly rewarding experience.

This year, the entire Fall 2009 pledge class participated along with many older sisters. With plenty of motivation and encouragement from our morale leaders, most of the Alpha Chis stayed for the entire 24 hours! Along with the satisfaction of being involved in Dance Marathon, we also received the recognition of winning Best Banner out of all the organizations that participated in the event! Dance Marathon is always a super fun and successful event and all the Alpha Chis are proud to make a positive impact on the lives of those children that are a part of the Miracle Network.
